As part of recent regulatory shifts aimed at streamlining the immigration system, the Canadian government has introduced a major policy change for international students. Effective April 1, 2026, the administrative process for students participating in work placements has been significantly simplified to reduce paperwork and delays.
No More Separate Co-op Work Permits
The most significant change is that post-secondary international students no longer need to apply for a separate Co-op Work Permit. Previously, students whose programs required a mandatory internship or placement had to submit an additional application to work legally in those roles.
Integrated Authorization: Your study permit now automatically authorizes these placements, provided the work is an essential part of your degree or diploma program.
Automatic Withdrawals: If you currently have a pending application for a co-op work permit that is no longer necessary under these rules, IRCC is automatically withdrawing those files to clear the backlog.
Why This Matters
This shift is designed to remove the "administrative burden" from both students and educational institutions. It allows students to begin their mandatory work terms as soon as they are ready, without waiting for additional government processing times.
Stay Compliant
While this makes the process easier, it is vital to remember that this authorization only applies to work that is a required component of your academic program. Standard off-campus work for non-academic purposes still follows existing hourly limits and regulations.
RCIC Consultant Tip: Always ensure your school's international student office has confirmed your placement is a mandatory requirement of your program before you begin work.
